Standing on Principles: Your Path to Success in Leadership

Standing on Principles!

Hello Team Navigators,

Welcome to another edition of Team Navigator! This week, we’re discussing a topic that is foundational to building and leading high-performing teams: principles. Drawing insights from my recent episode of The Operations Toolbox Podcast, for Business Leaders. I’ll explore why principles matter so much in leadership, the challenges of leading without them, and how to integrate them into your team’s culture.

Why Principles Matter

Principles are the core beliefs and values that guide a leader’s actions and decisions. Think of them as your internal compass. During tough times, your principles keep you grounded, inform your responses, and influence your team’s culture. A team led with fairness, respect, and integrity develops trust, alignment, and resilience.

Without principles, teams often fall into disarray—misalignment, conflict, and lack of trust become the norm. As a leader, your principles set the tone for your team’s behavior and performance.

A Real Lesson in Leading with Principles

In one of my most challenging leadership experiences, I was publicly promised a promotion only to have that promise broken and ripped away from me right in front of my team. The disappointment and frustration were almost unbearable. Although this wasn't the first time, it was different. This time my team had a front-row seat and witnessed the empty promises and lack of regard for the value I brought to the organization. While I knew it would be the last time I allowed it to happen, I also knew that I had to be mindful of how I handled the situation.

Instead of allowing negativity to fester, I leaned on my principles of respect and accountability. I provided space for my team to share their feelings but avoided negative conversations about leadership. My principles ensured that I remained professional, and my team followed my lead, staying focused on our goals.

This experience reinforced the importance of leading by example. It wasn’t easy, but it was worth it, our team maintained its high performance and unity despite the challenges.

How to Integrate Principles into Your Leadership Style

  • Define Your Core Principles
Reflect on the values most important to you as a leader. Write them down and ensure they are clear. Examples include fairness, transparency, and respect.
  • Communicate Them Clearly
Share your principles with your team. Be explicit about what is acceptable and what is not, ensuring everyone understands the standards you’re setting.
  • Lead by Example
Consistently demonstrate your principles in your actions. If you value fairness, show it in how you make decisions. Walk the talk to build credibility and trust.
  • Reinforce Through Communication
Regularly revisit your principles in team meetings and one-on-one conversations. Repetition helps embed these values into the team’s culture.
  • Hold Everyone Accountable
Ensure that both you and your team uphold these principles. Address misalignments promptly and consistently.

Laying the Foundational Groundwork for a Successful Journey

Principles are not just personal, they shape your team’s culture and performance. By leading with integrity and setting a clear standard, you foster trust, alignment, and resilience, even in challenging times.

While having team core values is great, you must first focus on your values as a leader. These values and guiding principles will help you become the leader you would like to be and assist with decision making.
